Why do I get a program.exe error everytime I try to open attachments?

Most often this comes from having EarthLink on your computer and then once that program is removed this error sometimes comes up.  Follow the directions below to help fix the problem.

Two extensions need to be checked. .EML and .URL

 WINDOWS 95

Double click on MY COMPUTER
Click on VIEW (at the top) then select OPTIONS
Click on the FILE TYPES tab
Locate the ".eml" extension
(Most likely listed as "Internet E-Mail Message")
(or "EarthLink E-Mail Message")

Click on the EDIT button
Click on the EDIT button
The line APPLICATION USED TO PERFORM ACTION needs to look like:
"C:\Program Files\Outlook Express\msimn.exe" /eml:%1
(This may vary because OE could be located anywhere)
(You may need to click the BROWSE button and locate "msimn.exe")
(Be sure to append " /eml:%1" to the end of it, space included, no quotes)

Click OK
Click OK

Locate the ".url" extension
(Most likely listed as "URL:HypterText Transfer Protocol")

Click on the EDIT button
Click on the EDIT button
The line APPLICATION USED TO PERFORM ACTION needs to look like:
"C:\Program Files\Internet Explorer\iexplore.exe" -nohome
(This may vary because IE could be located anywhere)
(You may need to click the BROWSE button and locate "iexplore.exe")
(Be sure to append " -nohome" to the end of it, space included, no quotes)
(and make sure the path is surrounded in quotes)

Click OK
Click OK

NOTE!: There may be TWO listings for URL:HyperText Transport Protocol.
BOTH need to be fixed!

Click OK

WINDOWS 98

Double click on MY COMPUTER
Click on VIEW (at the top) then select FOLDER OPTIONS
Click on the FILE TYPES tab
Locate the ".eml" extension
(Most likely listed as "Internet E-Mail Message")
(or "EarthLink E-Mail Message")

Click on the EDIT button
Click on the EDIT button
The line APPLICATION USED TO PERFORM ACTION needs to look like:
"C:\Program Files\Outlook Express\msimn.exe" /eml:%1
(This may vary because OE could be located anywhere)
(You may need to click the BROWSE button and locate "msimn.exe")
(Be sure to append " /eml:%1" to the end of it, space included, no quotes)

Click OK
Click OK (or CLOSE)

Locate the ".url" extension
(Most likely listed as "URL:HypterText Transfer Protocol")

Click on the EDIT button
Click on the EDIT button
The line APPLICATION USED TO PERFORM ACTION needs to look like:

(This may vary because IE could be located anywhere)
(You may need to click the BROWSE button and locate "iexplore.exe")
(Be sure to append " -nohome" to the end of it, space included, no quotes)
(and make sure the path is surrounded in quotes)

Click OK
Click OK (or CLOSE)

WINDOWS ME

Click on the EDIT button
The line APPLICATION USED TO PERFORM ACTION needs to look like:

(Most likely you will only have to add the last part after the ending ")
(In other words, append " /eml:%1" to the end of it, space included, no quotes)

Click OK
Click OK

Click on the CHANGE button
Locate Internet Explorer in the list and select it then click OK
(If for some reason it is not listed, click on the OTHER button)
(You need to locate "iexplor.exe" which *might* be in)
(C:\Program Files\Internet Explorer\)
Click on the OK button

Click on the ADVANCED button
Click on OPEN under ACTIONS
Click on the EDIT button
The line APPLICATION USED TO PERFORM ACTION needs to look like:
rundll32.exe shdocvw.dll,OpenURL %l

Click OK
Click OK (or CLOSE)
Click CLOSE

WINDOWS 2000 PROFESSIONAL

Double click on MY COMPUTER
Click on TOOLS (at the top) then select FOLDER OPTIONS
Click on the FILE TYPES tab
Locate the ".eml" extension

Click on the CHANGE button
Locate Outlook Express in the list and select it then click OK
