Clearing your Cache or Temporary Internet Files

What are cache files?

Your web browser saves copies of every web page and image it comes across in a place called your Cache, sometimes called your Temporary Internet Files. It does this to speed up the loading of web pages. If you've already been to that web site, and nothing has changed, then why bother re-downloading it all again? Your web browser checks every web page every time you visit to see if it has a copy saved on your hard drive. If it does, then it checks to see if the one on the hard drive is not current. If it's not, then it loads the new page off the Internet. 

Why do I have to clear these files?

Like any file on your hard drive, these files can get corrupted. As a rule, your browser will only keep so many of these files. Once it reaches that limit, your computer has to make choices as to which files it needs to keep, and which ones it can throw out. Depending on your computer, this can take quite a bit of time. If it comes across a corrupted file, your computer can crash. It's best to keep an eye on your cache files and clean them out every so often. 

How do I clear these files?

It depends on what web browser you use. To find out what browser you're using, do the following: 

Click on Help. 
Click on About Communicator or About Navigator or About Internet Explorer and copy down what version it says. 
Click on Back to bring you back to this page. If you're using Internet Explorer, instead click OK. 
Now find your browser below: 

Netscape Navigator

Click on Options
Click on Network Preferences
Click on the Cache tab
Click on the Clear disk cache now button. If you're using Windows, you should also click the Clear memory cache now button. 

Netscape Communicator

Click on Edit
Click on Preferences
Double-click on Advanced
Click on Cache
Click on Clear Disk Cache button. If you're using Windows, you should also click the Clear Memory Cache button also. 
Click on OK

Macintosh Internet Explorer version 2.0

Click on Edit
Click on Options
Click on Advanced
Click on Empty button. 
Click OK

Internet Explorer 3.0

Click on View
Click on Options
Click on the Advanced tab
Click on Settings
Click on Empty Folder
Click on OK

Internet Explorer 4.0

Click on View
Click on Internet Options
Click on Delete Files
Click on OK

Internet Explorer 5.0 and up

Click on Tools
Click on Internet Options
Click on Delete Files
Click on OK.
